Community Support & Tolerance

Dear Duke Students,

Of late, we are challenged to respond to symbols and expressions of hate and intolerance. Last week, upon discovery of a swastika painted on an East Campus wall, President Brodhead noted, "The painting of a swastika on Baldwin Auditorium is a repugnant act that deserves our strong condemnation…It is a universal symbol of prejudice, hatred and the violence they can unleash. Those forces have no place on this campus or in society at large. It must be all of our work to replace them with inclusiveness, tolerance and mutual respect."

This week, we have learned that the Phelps family, of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, plans to bring their vehement anti-gay messages to an off-campus location in Durham. Though their speech may be protected under law, their hateful and hurtful message is an insult to our community, and symbolizes prejudice and hatred that could incite violence.

This group thrives on media attention. Their actions are specifically designed to incite reaction and provoke verbal and physical responses. As difficult as it may be, the best thing we can do as a community is to deny them the attention they seek. We must counter their words of hatred with words of affirmation offered at venues distant from wherever they seek to position themselves.

To that end, Duke Chapel and members of the Religious Life Staff at Duke University will be hosting a breakfast for LGBT students, friends, and allies on the lawn in front of the Chapel at 7:30am on Monday, April 20, as a way of offering support and friendship to LGBT students and allies. In addition, the LGBT Center encourages everyone to wear their Love=Love tee shirt that day and join us in this very visible show of support.

We have much to celebrate at Duke. Among our special traits is the ability for our community to come together at challenging times. I am so proud to be a member of this wonderful community.

aka a UNC Fan. What the hell?

About me not liking Zac Efron:

maybe its cause your black?

Seriously?

So I didn't know he was a UNC fan. That changes the whole game. I can't stand them or anything associated with them (besides MJ), so I'm ready for this to be over. His attempt at making it better:

cant i like unc a little bit?
4:34 PMjust a little?
4:35 PMi mean minnesota got theyre ass stomped
4:35 PMand unc is in the championship game
4:35 PMsorry duke didnt pan out but im not really sure which shade of blue is better
4:36 PMlady lady, dont be mad at me
4:36 PMcant you handle a little competition babes?
4:37 PMi mean i know your bball team cant but im sure you can
4:38 PMgawd its like i slept with you and told you i had hiv the day after

No. You can't not like UNC. Even a little bit. You aren't really sure which shade of blue is better? IT IS DUKE BLUE AND NOT BITCH BLUE. You know my basketball team can't handle competition but you're sure I can? GET HERPES IN YOUR MOUTH.

Dear John Wall,

Dear John Wall,

Yo, dude, I hear you're pretty good. Great, even. That if we manage to snag you that it's possible that we'll have the best recruiting class for 2010. No lie, that's fucking legit. You know I'm a huge fan of any opportunity to make my team better. But let me just say that you need to get your shit together. All this holding out and indecision? That's not fucking fly. It makes me weary about you. I get it. Deciding where to go to college is a huge decision. Even as a student, it's a big deal. As a highly recruited athlete, I can't even begin to imagine the pressure. I know what Duke can offer you. I know what you can offer Duke. I'm just not sure that both of those things will ultimately mesh together. But if you know where you're going already, then I'm going to need you to bloody say that already. I'm tired of the drama. Stop jerking us around. I don't appreciate it.

<3,

Britt

Don't You Dare Leave

Since March of 2006, I've been in love with Gerald Henderson. That is just fact. I knew he was going to be my favorite. Until this season, the majority of that was purely on his looks. Then he decided this was going to be his year. He made the decision to put our team on his back and carry us to the top. The only problem is that he didn't. Brother didn't even come close. Now, I'm not trying to blame G. Basketball is a team effort, but don't say that we can come to you and don't deliver. Don't put yourself in a position to be our all and then fuck up.

I've heard multiple rumors (more than I have in past years) about him leaving and jumping to the NBA. G is a great player. He's explosive in all the right ways. But if he leaves after this year, he is the biggest bitch on the face of the planet. He came to Duke to win a championship. So far, he's only won the ACC. That shouldn't be enough for him. If he leaves having a final game in which he only made 1 field goal and scored only 7 points. Four of which from the free throw strike, then I hope he flops in the NBA.

I love Duke first and players second. I have not forgotten that. I will not forget that. I will not be able to accept it if he turns his back on this team. On it's fans. On me.

He better not fucking leave.

That is all.
